Welcome to this edition of Grace Notes  a Newsletter from Grace United Methodist Church, Arlington, TX. This newsletter comes to let you know about happenings at Grace, and to invite you to reflect on your walk with God as you strive to follow Jesus’ summary of the commandments: to love God, one another, and oneself.

Be ready to imagine the impossible!

*******************************
Greetings Grace!

In just a few short weeks, our children and youth will be headed back to school.

I remember what it was like having to prepare for a new school year, after a summer of lazy days and staying up all night.

Do you remember what is was like to shop for school clothes, purchase school supplies, and pick out the perfect backpack? I do. I also remember how I felt, anticipating seeing old friends and wondering about meeting new ones.

Custodians are making last minute repairs and cleaning classrooms. Teachers around the metroplex are beginning to prepare classrooms so that they are ready by the time school starts.

What can we do to help prepare our students to get ready for the new year?  You guessed it! Lift them up in prayer.

In these next few weeks, I encourage you to lift up in prayer, not just our children and youth, but anyone who may be beginning or returning to school.

Some students will be returning to the school they attended previously while others may be transfering to a new school. Going back to school after being away and establishing new routines, can be overwhelming. However, prayer changes things!

Through prayer we ask God for protection, strength, wisdom, direction. Through the Word, we get a better understanding of what God has promised us. We receive confirmation and clarity from Gods Word.

Joshua reminds us in the following scripture that God is with us wherever we go,

“Have not I commanded you? Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”. Joshua 1:9 (AMP)

As we move through these next few weeks, let us all be reminded that God is with us wherever we go because He has already prepared the way.

Blessings & Peace,
Pam Pinkerton

Grace and Peace to you, An Important Announcement!

I bring you good tidings of great joy!  After the diligent work of members of the Administrative Council, the Discernment Team, and the Transition Team, the entire Grace UMC Arlington operation is moving to a new location.

This means all of our Worship Services, Bible Studies, Activities, Practices, and Administrative Operations will be relocating to 2020 South Collins Street.

Many of you know this to be the current location of the Church of the Good Shepherd UMC.  We will be sharing worship space, classrooms, and office space with wonderful members of COGS (as they affectionately refer to themselves).

The first service at the new location will be Sunday, September 13th, at 9:00 am.  During the course of the transition, we will continue to keep everyone updated as to the logistical arrangements of the move.  With this being said, I want to thank God, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has blessed us to be able to continue striving to walk out our vision of “bringing people into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ”.

On Sunday, September 2nd, (First Sunday in September), we will show honor to our current sanctuary and holy items, with a wonderful praise celebration as we decommission this sacred space.  Let’s continue to thank God for supplying our every need as we, “…walk by faith and not by sight”.

We continue to pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Greetings Grace,

Welcome! As a noun, the word has many meanings. But as a verb its manifestations are countless.  God is the originator of welcome. In the beginnong of biblical time, God welcomed us into creaing and into existence. We experience the same love and welcome in Jesus Christ. This welcome is not only to make us wanted and accepted, but it is also an invitation to share in God’s work. God’s welcome motivates us and compels us to extend the same welcome to others. We are transformed as we express welcome. (United Methodist Women ProgramBook 2014-2015, Welcomed by God, Welcoming All).

1 Peter 4:9-10 reminds us to, “Open our homes to each other without complaining. And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God’s diverse gifts” (CEB)

Many were blessed by the “gifts” that God has given to those who served during VBS. Many are blessed by the “gifts” that are shared during worship, Sunday school, bible class, etc.

As we move to our “One Glorious Service” starting Sunday, July 5, 2015, prayerfully ask God how you can use your gift(s) to serve others. Maybe it’s greeting, ushering, hospitality hour, teaching, or helping with the children and youth. Let’s all do what we can to help others:

“EXPERIENCE GRACE!”

Grace and Peace to you,

What Is Immersion?

Immersion – Based on the Oxford Dictionary means; a deep involvement into something.  It is the method of teaching a foreign language by the exclusive use of that language.

What is Immersion in Grace 2015?  In our context, Immersion in Grace 2015 is a deep involvement into the presence and power of God.  It is taking the weekend of July 24-26, 2015, to exclusively use as a place in time to encounter the grace of God.  I strongly encourage you to set this weekend aside specifically for turning our hearts toward heaven, for “setting our minds on things above…” and to Experience Grace!

I have taken the liberty to enclose the dates and times of each service in this article.  Our prayer is that each worship service, teaching session, and preaching experience will add to our faith the things that we need to accomplish what God has assigned us to do in this world.

Friday, July 24th
10 am – Teaching/Healing Session – Pastor Fred Bates, Jr.
7 pm - Worship Service - Rev. Sylvester Key II

Saturday, July 25th
10 am – Teaching/Healing Session – Pastor Fred Bates, Jr.
10:30 am – Worship Service – Rev. Sylvester Key II
7 pm – Worship Service – Rev. Joyce Campbell

Sunday, July 26
9am – Worship Service – Pastor Fred Bates, Jr.
11:45am – Worship Service – Rev. Joyce Campbell
7 pm – Worship Service – Rev. Louis Carr

Of course out wonderful music ministry team of choir, praise, and GEM members will be in the house.  All worship services and teaching sessions will take place at the Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 2020 South Collins Street where Reverend Eldon Reynolds and the congregation stand ready to welcome us in the experience of this spiritual encounter.

I would love to see you at every single session and service. We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

PARANAQUE, Philippines (UMNS) — In observance of World Oceans Day, United Methodists led a coastal cleanup at Freedom Island, a critical habitat and eco-tourism area that is the nesting ground of fishes in Manila Bay and also serves as a bird sanctuary. Gladys P. Mangiduyos reports.

United Methodists celebrate freedom on 150th Juneteenth GALVESTON, Texas (UMNS) – On June 19, 1865, federal troops under the command of Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with a message of freedom for slaves. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, slaves in Texas finally received word that they were free. Now, 150 years later, Juneteenth is commemorated across the country with parades, festivals, family activities, and worship services, reminding all of us that freedom was long sought and should not be taken for granted.

Women model United Methodist uniforms

HARARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS) — Winnet Matiza slowly made her way up the flight of creaky steps, holding on to the rail for support. A few concerned onlookers assisted her, wary that the 76-year-old might slip and hurt herself. Last month, this United Methodist church member was crowned “queen” at the inaugural Chitungwiza-Marondera District modeling show, organized by The United Methodist Church women’s union, Rukwadzano Rwe Wadzimai. Eveline Chikwanah reports.

Church opens doors for stranger others turned away

HAM LAKE, Minn. (UMNS) — When Cedar United Methodist Church held a memorial service for a woman who died after a battle with cancer and had no resources or living relatives, the pastor thought the church was welcoming a stranger. Eight churches had declined to hold the service. But after the memorial, a church member told the Rev. H. Grant Tanner that he knew the woman, who he said had been baptized and confirmed at Cedar and was active in the youth ministry for many years. “Those eight churches that passed on her allowed her to come home,” Tanner said. Christa Meland reports for the Minnesota Conference.

Pastor’s Column

Grace and Peace to you,

Walking in my God-given vision (foresight into His purpose and plan, with the insight to carry it out) takes looking beyond where I am in order to see the possibilities.  This third point in the series; Abraham’s Vision is quite important when we consider what God told Abraham in Genesis 13:14b-15, “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.”

The principle found here indicates that you must be able to see “from the place where you are”.  The reason most people never begin to walk in their God-given vision is because they can never see beyond their current condition or situation.  If it’s walking in health and healing, can you see yourself outside of the captivity of sickness and disease? If it’s some sort of emotional bondage, can you see yourself free from the chains that hold you?

God has given each of us the ability to see through the eyes of faith, to “see afar off” as it were.  It’s time we start gazing into the sky to see, “the stars of the sky in multitude…”  Look beyond your limitations and look to God’s unlimited ability.  That place where God, “who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (imagine)…” is waiting for you to walk in your God-given vision.

To get more on this, order the CD from Sunday, May 31st; which is the third teaching in the “Vision Series” sub-division, “Abraham’s Vision”.

Missed a service? Order your CDs for listening, studying, sharing with others, and downloading onto your favorite device.  The “6 Principles of Vision”, “Preparation for Vision” and “Unity in Vision” Divisions are now available in the four pack album for your spiritual enrichment as we make plans to continue “Running with the Vision”.

We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Membership is about active discipleship. (the following information shared from the United Methodist Interpreter)

When we unite with a local congregation of The United Methodist Church, one of the central themes is growing faith in Jesus Christ. Ways that we live out membership vows are by participating actively in Sunday school, attending weekly worship, supporting church ministries through financial giving and seeking ways to serve in mission and ministry. (Rev. Dawn Chesser).

Accountable Discipleship

Accountability is practiced in a network of grace based on the fact that God, out of great love for us, came to dwell amount us.

Believing God is at work within us (sanctifying grace), we form smaller communities of faith to help one grow in God’s grace, understanding and good works and encourage one another to pray and to the right thing.

While accountable discipleship groups continue today, people also meet in study groups, women’s or men’s groups or youth groups for prayer, encouragement and service. (Rev. Wendy Deichmann)

Welcome to this edition of Grace Notes

a Newsletter from Grace United Methodist Church, Arlington, TX. This newsletter comes to let you know about happenings at Grace, and to invite you to reflect on your walk with God as you strive to follow Jesus’ summary of the commandments: to love God, one another, and oneself.

*******************************
Greetings Grace,

Our current sermon series has been focused on seeking vision with a spirit of unity. Scriptures references have reminded us to “live together in unity and that the anointing of God flows best where where is unity” (Psalm 133). When people come together for kingdom building with God, there is less confusion more accomplishments and productivity.

We’ve heard that plans fail if they are in conflict with God’s commands which is one of the reasons we go through discernment processes.  Vision through unity reminds us that we all have gifts, but we cannot do it all by ourselves.  We need each other.

As we seek to “make disciples through our words and actions in accordance to God’s grace”  I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming Community Prayer on Saturday, May 23rd at 9:00 am. During this time we come together with confidence and in agreement that God hears the prayers we place before Him as a community of believers.

Following are focus points from the April 25th Community Prayer:

·        Discernment Process – Knowledge of God’s Will (Col. 1:9)

·        Upcoming Capital Campaign – Provision (2 Corin. 9:10-11)

·        Financial Freedom Seminar – Wisdom (James 1:5)

·        2015 Immersion in Grace Worship along with the speakers and leaders (John 4:23-24 & Eph. 6:19)

God continues to give us what we need to do the work that He is calling us to do. There is no lack, only potential in God.

Please keep the above focal points in prayer this week.
Blessings and Peace,
Pam Pinkerton

Pastor’s Column

Grace and Peace to you,

Jesus, in John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

If we were to search throug this simple phrase, we could find gold nuggets of wisdom that will last beyond any trial or tribulation that may come our way.  Notice Jesus commends to us, peace.  This however is not just any peace, but “My peace”.

Often we seek places of tranquility in order to get away from the noise and pressure from this world.  However, Jesus is clear that the world may offer a tranquility that does not “surpass all understanding”.  What the Lord is encouraging here is to find a place “in Him” where no trouble of the world can disturb or disrupt.

Are you resting “in Christ”?  Are all your hopes and joys “in Christ”?  Does your peace come from that place “in Christ”?  If not, seek the place “in Christ” where peace goes undisturbed and uninterrupted.

“Friends and Family” day is May 24th!  We’re looking forward to seeing your friends, loved ones, and co-workers as together we, Experience Grace!

Finally, make sure your calendars, day planners, and electronic devices are marked for July 24-26, 2015.  These dates are set aside for a spiritual encounter as we look to the 2015 Immersion in Grace!

Missed a service?  Well order your CDs for listening, studying, sharing with others, and downloading onto your favorite device.  The “6 Principles of Vision” series and the “Preparation for Vision” series is now available in the four pack album for your spiritual enrichment as we make plans to continue “Running with the Vision”.

We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Congratulations Graduates
Congratulations to the 2015 Grace Graduates!
It seems like yesterday when my dad was looking on proudly as the youth of Grace UMC began to graduate from high school.  Now there is a scholarship in his memory that will forever embrace the love and pride he felt as a Sunday school and Bible Study mentor and teacher to the youth.

Robert C. Jones, Sr. loved

Jones, Sr. family, we congratulate the youth on a job well done!

Embrace the spirit of peace that was a huge part of Mr. Jones and the legacy he leaves at Grace UMC.

Greetings Grace,

I can tell that spring is in the air!  It is a wonderful thing to be able to be awakened in the morning by the birds singing. They know how to greet the morning. They let me know it’s time to rise and get moving. As soon as the sun begins to rise, they start singing. Have you heard them? Have you heard the excitement as the morning ushers in?

The birds remind me that it’s morning. A new day has begun. Whatever happened yesterday is now in the past. It’s like their song is saying, time to wake and give God praise; get up and live in this new day!

I know God is pleased when we give him praise. Whether it’s through song, our words, actions; God is pleased when we give him praise. Scripture reminds us that “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). We were made in his image; why not start the day with giving him praise?

There are many things that can pull us away from giving God praise as soon as we rise. Distractions, thoughts, emails, texts, people; things happen which cause us to make decisions as to if we will start the day with praise…..or not.

In our Tuesday night bible class, we talked about “Living the Faith”. It’s a learning process. It requires us to do something, consistently each day. In living out our faith, we can’t help but to give God praise. God has been so good to us, even the times when we don’t think we deserve it. God is consistent each and everyday.

I am excited, God planted seeds and they are growing! At Grace, we are growing. To God be the glory! Praise the Lord like the birds. Praise the Lord for all that he has done for you. Give God praise for the things he hasn’t even shown us yet.

How good it is to sing praises to the Lord!

Blessings and Peace,

Pam Pinkerton

We spent an outstanding month of March “Experiencing Grace” through the 2015 Women’s Conference and the early part of April during Holy Week.  What grace was upon us all!  I am grateful to all who worked hard (by the wisdom and power of God) to make these experiences so blessed and God-filled.   I am basking in the realization that God is giving us the increase as we continue to plant and water together in the vineyard of God’s purpose and plan for our church.

There are exciting days ahead!  Not just on our calendar, but days of blessing and open heavens await us as we continue to follow the path of our God-given assignment.  I encourage you to get caught in this “rain” of the Holy Spirit that is falling on us during our services, seminars, prayer meetings, and special events.  Make sure you monitor your monthly calendar for prayer dates and events.  We are also planning a very special “Informational Meeting” on Sunday, May 3rd at 10:30 am.  This meeting will bring you up to date on the discerning process of our Exploratory Committee and all of the new information that was gathered since our last meeting.

Finally, start marking your calendars, day planners, and electronic devices for July 24-26, 2015.  These dates are set aside for our spiritual refreshing as we look to the 2015 Immersion in Grace!

Missed a service…, well order your CDs for listening, studying, sharing with others, and downloading onto your favorite device.

Growing in Grace

I would like to take a moment and say “thank you” to everyone who supported the Easter Egg Hunt. It is a wonderful thing to see the children/youth working together, encouraging each other, helping one another.

Easter is a time we remember what Christ did for us. We are challenged to do things differently than we have in the past. Watching the youth fellowship together is living proof of that.

Greetings Grace,

Have you ever felt like you put your best foot forward when completing a task, only to feel like no one noticed? Have you fought for something, and when finished felt like no one cared? When that happens, have you felt discouraged, and thought about giving up because of that?

Being a disciple for Christ may seem like no one noticed, no one cared. You may even feel like you are alone.

“God isn’t unjust so that he forgets your efforts and the love you have shown for his name’s sake when you served and continue to serve God’s holy people” Hebrews 6:10 (CEB)

The scripture reminds us that when we do what we do for God, i.e. “Bringing people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ”, God remembers that.

.”But we desperately want each of you to show the same effort to make your hope sure until the end”. Hebrews 6:11 (CEB)

As we are helping to make disciples for God, we are reminded to “show the same effort to make our hope sure until the end” That’s why it’s important to stay connected to the Word.

12 This is so you won’t be lazy but follow the example of the ones who inherit the promises through faith and patience”, Hebrews 6:12 CEB.

It is important that we check in regularly with our Power Source in order to balance all the things God has us to do; in order to have patience when things are not moving like we’d like.

We all have a part in, “Running with the Vision”. It takes the community to join together so we can be where God needs us to be. During this time it may seem like things are not moving fast enough. That is why we pray, “Thy Will Be Done”.

While we are moving, doing, being, bringing, we need to remember to take time out for God, praying collectively as a group and individually.

Blessings and Peace,
Pam Pinkerton

Pastor’s Column
Grace to you,

“Where there is no vision, the people perish:...”  Proverbs 29:18a

This is an exciting month as we are about to “Experience Grace” in our 2015 Women’s Conference (March 20-22).  The focus of this year’s conference is “Empowered for Vision”.  Many people have had plans and ideas from God, but because of life situations and unforeseen challenges, the Heavenly Vision has been crushed.  This conference is specifically designed to resurrect and empower the God given vision inside each of us.  Make plans to saturate yourself in every worship service and empowerment session in order to get the full benefit of God’s grace!

If you have missed any of the services, make sure to order your CD for listening, studying, sharing with others, and downloading onto your favorite device.  The “6 Principles of Vision” series and the “Preparation for Vision” series will be available in the four pack album for your spiritual enrichment as we make plans to start “Running with the Vision”.

Finally, as we are in the midst of this Holy Season, remember to invite others to our special Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter services.  They will be full of God’s presence and joy as we celebrate the death, burial, and yes… the mighty resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ!

We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Funding the Mission

Women prayerfully make financial pledges to their local organization or district each year. Their pledge offerings contribute to the local mission, spiritual formation, programs for membership development and outreach in the community. For most members, making an offering to her unit’s Pledge to Mission is a way of supporting the organization and expressing her commitment to mission. However, a pledge or financial gift is not a prerequisite for membership.(United Methodist Women, On a path for Mission)

Grace United Methodist Women will meet on March 28th at 10:00 am. We will be celebrating African American History. Please join us; all women are invited to attend this special program.

I currently don't have insurance and I had been paying $115.32/mo for one of my prescriptions. I went to pickup a refill last week and it was only $16.40. I went to the Pharmacy today and asked why the difference - make sure it wasn't an error. I found that they had setup a Texas Drug card for me. I didn't know this existed. Glory to God!

I just want to pass it on; It might bless someone else.

February Grace Notes

2/8/2015

Welcome to this edition of Grace Notes a Newsletter from Grace United Methodist Church, Arlington, TX. This newsletter comes to let you know about happenings at Grace, and to invite you to reflect on your walk with God as you strive to follow Jesus’ summary of the commandments: to love God, one another, and oneself.

Be ready to imagine the impossible!

******

Greetings Grace,

The month of February is designated as “Black History Month”.  During this month we celebrate by honoring the contributions that were made by African Americans to U.S. History.

Did you know that Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Did you know that spurred by growing racial violence in the early twentieth century, and particularly by race riots in Springfield Illinois in 1908, a group of African American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Did you know that John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer in Ohio when he passed the Bar in 1854. When he was elected to the post of Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio in 1855 Langston became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. John Mercer Langston was also the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, famed poet of the Harlem Renaissance.

And, Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American ever elected to the United States Senate. He represented the state of Mississippi from February 1870 to March 1871.

While we celebrate our history makers, innovators, those who opened doors, people who have paved the way, without the presence of God, none of the accomplishments would be possible.

“Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory; because of your love and faithfulness” Psalm 115:1 (NIV)

“Lord we thank you for always making a way, for creativity, for vision, and for your love. Amen”

Blessings and Peace,

Pam Pinkerton

Pastor’s Column

Grace to you,

“Where there is no vision, the people perish: ...”  Proverbs 29:18a

In the “6 Principles of Vision” series (make sure you get the four CD Pack), principle #5 examines how your vision should critically influence your priorities.  Jesus said that we should seek the Kingdom’s priorities first, and then all other “things” will be added.

I ask three important questions when considering an action, activity, or project;

1.  How will this affect the Kingdom’s priority?

2.  Can I afford the cost (time, money, effort)?  Read Luke 14:25-33

3.  How does this affect the vision for my family?

Many people waste a lot of time, energy, money, and emotional strength on things that do not matter one iota (jot – very small Greek alphabet) to the Kingdom of God.  Jesus was compelling in His message about the way people waste time with worrying as it accomplishes nothing.  Worry and anxiety takes a lot of time and energy away from our divine productivity.  Let’s choose to be Kingdom minded in all we do, in all we say, and in all the ways we think.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Month and look forward to attending the 2015 Women’s Conference coming March 20-22.

I urge you to hook into the services this year to become a part of what God is doing in the life of the church.  If for some strange reason you are unable to be in one of the Sunday morning services, I encourage you to purchase the CD for listening, sharing with others, or downloading onto your audio device for repeated listening and study.  In 2015, the members of Grace UMC Arlington are “running with the vision”.

We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Turning racial nightmares into dreams
ASBURY PARK, N.J. (UMNS) — The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that we can transform evil into good. God enables us to do that. But we first have to acknowledge the evil before we, through God, can transform it, writes the Rev. Gilbert H. For the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race, he also put together a viewing guide for the movie “Selma.”

History of Hymns: ‘Soon and Very Soon’
DALLAS (UMNS) – Andraé Crouch, a giant of gospel music, died Jan. 8. C. The United Methodist Church

The Grace United Methodist Church Mission Statement reminds us that we “seek to bring people into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ”.  In order to that we must be motivating, inspiring; we must be a vital congregation.

Here are five common characteristics of vital congregations – (1) Inviting and inspiring worship, (2) engaged disciples in mission and outreach, (3) gifted, equipped and empowered lay leadership, (4) effective, equipped and inspired clergy leadership, (5) small groups that include children and youth designed to encourage, support and hold disciples accountable in their Christian walk. (UM Handbook, Let’s Go Fishing)

From time to time we must ask ourselves, how are we doing? What are we doing to keep Grace a vital congregation? We must specifically ask, “What am I doing as part of the Body of Grace?”  If you have comments or suggestions, please talk with a member of the leadership team at Grace. Scott Marshall (Pastor-Parish Relations Chair), Juanita Rischer (Nurture Chair), Sterling Langford (Board of Trustees Chair), Phyllis Scott (Finance Chair), Pam Pinkerton (Admin Council Chair). We’d love to hear from you! We want everyone who walks through the door to “Experience Grace!”

“Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong”. 1 Corin. 16:13 NRSV

Happy New Year!

Grace was on the move in 2014 and it gets even better in 2015.  We have so much to look forward to this year. Grace is growing and it shows!  I wanted to share the scripture above because in all that we do, we must stand firm in our faith. When you plan big, the enemy is even more on the prowl to steal, kill and destroy the vision God has placed before us. To help stand firm in your faith, we encourage you to be in attendance where your faith can grow.

Attendance in bible class is growing. You are really missing out on in depth teaching by not attending on Tuesdays at 7pm.  Sunday school starts at 10:25, right after the first service. Have you visited a class lately? We have classes for all ages. Stop by the hospitality table and then join a class. Let us know what you think. Your Sunday school teachers would love to hear from you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

We have added more corporate prayer meetings in 2015.  Join us on Saturday mornings. These meetings will be noted in the monthly calendars.

In addition, to help you “Experience Grace”, seminars are scheduled along with some special events. The Women’s Conference is in March and a Financial Freedom Seminar is scheduled in May.

Your leadership team is excited at what 2015 will bring!

Grace to you,

“ Where there is no vision, the people perish:…”  Proverbs 29:18a

Have you ever heard the phrase, “I’m bored because there is nothing to do”?  Either you may have said it at some time in your life, or if you have children, you have heard them vent this way in an effort to get you to make life more exciting.

A person who makes this kind of statement may not have a boredom problem, but in fact, may have a “vision” problem.  This year, 2015, we are going to spend a lot of time talking about “vision”.

The above referenced verse, as found in the King James Version, gives us the indication that there is an absolute need to have a heavenly vision in our personal lives, in the family, and in the church.

We have started the “Vision” series discussing the “6 Principles of Vision”.  The first principle that we have discussed is, “Vision starts with God.”  We have to find out if we are muddling through life with mere “good” ideas or if we are supernaturally infused with “God” ideas.

Greetings Grace!

Self-reflection, identifying and eliminating fears, tough questions, commitment, ownership, being specific, utilizing resources, and being held accountable. All of this in two hours; was it a counseling session? A mini retreat? No. It was the first session of “Manifest Destiny”.

What is Manifest Destiny? Phyllis Scott defined it as follows, “a future event that is sure to happen; a destiny that can be clearly seen and cannot be changed”.

Manifest Destiny is a place where we gather to grow. It is a place where we can sit, be quiet and process what action(s) we need to put in place to conquer something. It’s a place to make us think about things like: what is it that we want, what is our vision, and what strategy must we implement to live outside the box again. Manifest Destiny is another way to Experience Grace!

As I look back over the year, I see how the Lord has guided us here at Grace. There have been so many ways to Experience Grace!  Your leadership team is committed to making sure that you Experience Grace in 2015.

If you missed Manifest Destiny Saturday, don’t worry, we will be gathering again in January. Have a blessed Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

Blessings and Peace

Pastor’s Column

Grace to you,

Advent season, closing out 2014, preparing for 2015, and all the pressure and anxiety that goes along with this “most wonderful time of the year” makes some people experience times of hopelessness, depression and anxiety.  Here’s a thought…

“Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares about you.”[1]  (1 Peter 5:8) CEB

This is a simple but relevant reflection during this busy “religious” and “commercial” season.  Let’s learn to relax in the Lord.  Let’s learn to lean back in the presence of God just as if you were sitting in your most comfortable chair.  That comfortable place in your favorite chair where you take short but refreshing naps, enjoy easy conversations, eat a nice snack, or just taking in some quiet time.  Let your place in God be the same comfortable and relaxing experience during this busy time of year.

1st Peter is closed out refreshingly with one final thought, “…Peace to you all who are in Christ.” (1 Peter 5:14b)  May His peace be with us all both now and into the New Year. We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Greetings Grace!

You just never know what God will do when you are in the wilderness!  A few months ago, Grace was blessed to take several of our youth to Mission U at a weekend camp in Glen Rose.  After about an hour and a half ride, we arrived at “camp”, cabins, no TVs, lots of trails and trees!

Welcome to Mission U; organized by United Methodist Women; a place where people of all ages, gather to study a Spiritual Growth, Geographic or Social Issue.

“Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge”. Prov. 23:12 (NIV)

The social issue study for the youth was, “The Church and People with Disabilities”.  All day on a Saturday and a Sunday, the youth were engaged in this very important topic. I’m sure there may have been a number of other places they could have been, but they chose camp. And for some of the youth, this was their first experience at camp.

In the wilderness; well, it wasn’t that bad. There was time for fun in between classes and Mission U was a great place for the youth to bond, thus creating a stronger unit.  Our Mission Statement is for everyone at Grace. We are called to provide opportunities to make disciples through our words and actions in cooperation with God’s grace.

I am excited to share in this edition of Grace Notes – The OZ Blog, written by two of the youth who attended Mission U.

Blessings and Peace

Pastors Column
Grace to you,

Although we have almost completed the series, “Protecting What’s Important,” I want to encourage you to practice what you have learned.  I remember hearing the old adage “practice make perfect” and thought it was a great idea.  That was until an elementary coach said that “perfect practice makes perfect”.   What a concept!  The more we practice being doers of the Word, the more “perfect” we will get at doing the Word.  Let’s perfectly practice protecting what’s important.

The latest installment of the series deals with protecting what comes out of our mouths.

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit”[1].  Another reminder comes from Proverbs 13:3a which says, “People who watch their mouths guard their lives,”

Why is this important?  Well, it’s always good to remind ourselves that we have an enemy that is seeking to destroy God’s children, “The thief enters only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so that they could have life—indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest.” (John 10:10)

This thief uses all sorts of tricks and schemes to attempt to deprive us of this full life.  According to Peter he is even, “…on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

I commend to you the following steps that can assist us in watching our mouths.  I promise you will hear this again (smile).

1.  I must choose to control what comes out of my mouth (Prov. 21:23)

2.  I must depend on the Spirit of God for control (2 Tim 1:7)

3.  I must be aware that my words, can hurt, hinder, and in some cases destroy people. (gossip)  Prov. 11:13, 12:18, 15:1, 26:20

4.  I must be aware that my words can hurt, hinder, and destroy things in my life.  (James 3:1-10)

We continue to love and pray for your growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“Living with Disability”
O: In today’s society we have encounters with different kinds of people. Sometimes, some of these people tend not to be normal either in their physical appearance or their behaviors.  These kinds of people are known to be disabled. As a result of their disability, they are treated differently from those who are normal and in a worst case scenario they are disregarded in our society.  However, it shouldn’t be this way, similar to every one of us, they are also human and therefore, they deserve to be treated equally.
Z: Therefore, when describing people based on their disability, we make use of Person First Language. Person First Language puts the emphasis on the person not on the disability (Disabilities and our responses, Beth Miller, Lesson 3, pg. 30). Basically, the disabled individual is categorized to be normal but when describing them, adjectives are used. Here are some examples below:
O: Instead of saying, “The blind man. You would say, “The man who is visually impaired”. Instead of saying, “She is handicapped”, you say, “She has a physical disability”. Instead of saying, “A down syndrome child”, you would say, “A child with down syndrome”. Instead of saying “A special ed student or a dumb person”, you would say, “A student with a learning need or a person who can’t speak”.
Z: In conclusion, we should treat others equally. We should not make others feel bad for just being people with different abilities. But, we should make people with different abilities feel good about themselves and feel welcomed.

Eating Right to Boost Your Memory (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics)
The following are foods to help boost memory and brain function. These foods also help with better cognitive function, memory and level of alertness:

Eat plenty of vegetables, especially broccoli, cabbage and dark leafy greens.
Eat plenty of berries and cherries. These are good for a snack, in cereal or smoothies.
Get adequate omega-3 fatty acids – salmon, Bluefin tuna, sardines (fatty fish)
Snack on a handful of walnuts. These can also be added to oatmeal or a salad.

Mission, Missions, Opportunities
Mission or Missions?  Often those of us who are inside the church are confused when pastors and scholars of mission use the words “mission” and “missions” interchangeably…[Theologian Lesslie] Newbigin’s distinction between “mission” and “missions” can be a working definition for our understanding: “Mission is the entire task for which the Church is sent into the world. By ‘missions’ I mean those specific activities undertaken by human decisions to bring the Gospel to places or situations where it is not heard, to create a Christian presence in a place or situations where there is no such presence or no effective presence.”

Mission, in short, is the goal and the purpose of God for us. Missions are the human objectives by which we respond to God’s love for us. God’s mission outlives individual and denominational missions. It does not end. (Excerpted from Glory E. Dharmaraj, Concepts of Mission (New York: Women’s Division, GBGM, 2005).

On behalf of the Outreach Committee,
I would like to thank everyone for showing extravagant generosity and radical hospitality during our Angel Tree efforts in 2013. Many families were blessed by your love and spirit of giving - they EXPERIENCED GRACE!

Christmas is just around the corner and we are planning our efforts for this year. Please note the following from Prison Fellowship, regarding Angel Tree:

"It Starts with a Gift and Leads to Lives Transformed through Jesus Christ"
When mom or dad is in prison, their children are often the silent sufferers. You can let them know they are not forgotten. Give them a gift on behalf of their incarcerated parent and in the name of Jesus."

Angel tags will be distributed 12/7/2014 - 12/14/2014 and pre-wrapped gifts are to be delivered no later than Tuesday, 12/16/2014.  Our "Birthday Party for Jesus" is scheduled for 12/20/2014. (watch for bulletin inserts and posters throughout the church).

Volunteers are needed to wrap and bag gifts and also to help at the party. Please see Rev. Penny Stemley for more details and to volunteer.
